*

'I accept; but I don’t agree' என்றார்.

''I accept, but I don't agree"'

Whatever does it mean? Did he accept the boy's statement that he (the writer) had lied. If so, what remains there to not agree?

If anyone says he never tell lies, i.e. like the mythological Harichandra always a staunch truth sayer, is he lying or not? The question is rhetorical; because he is lying.

You must be unlucky to get a Principal an English teacher, to boot, appreciating the writer's one liner on the stage. Call a spade, a spade.

All writers are infatuated with self-glorification, more so, if they are lionised by a lot of people. It goes into their heads and they start experiencing hallucinations of megalomania, which come out often in open through such idiotic declarations of self-aggrandisement. We can have a hearty laugh over their maveric behaviour, as in this episode involving Oscar Wilde:

Wilde was already a star writer in English language. Such writers are invited by many US universities as guests. Wilde went to US. At the airport customs, he was asked:

Do you have anything to declare?

He said: I have nothing to declare except my genius !

Dharmui!

On reading this, we can have a hearty laugh. Similarly, have a hearty laugh. Beyond that, don't go and hero worship like your Madurai boys who anoint the cut outs of their heroes with pots of milk :-)

தயவு செய்து இதில் குறிப்பிட்ட('I accept; but I don’t agree') வரியை எனக்காக இலகு தமிழ்ப்படுத்தவும்.

Prof!

A statement cannot have a separate entity away from its contents. If one accepts a statement, one accepts its contents. Suppose the statement contains lies, as in police interrogations, the accused make a statement full of lies in order to escape, the listener can say: I don’t accept your statements but have to record and submit them before the Judge court. Police records; Judge Listens. Police doesn’t accept the statements because accepting means accepting the lies. But the Judge can either accept or reject based only on the material placed before him by both parties.

If the writer has accepted the boy’s statement, he has accepted its contents. Otherwise, he could have said to the boy: No, dear. You are wrong in that by saying I never tell lies, I am a liar. Note please: I never tell lies. I am not a liar ever.

By saying //'I accept; but I don’t agree'//, the writer accepts the boy’s statement that he is a liar.

We don't learn English from Tamil novelists. As a teacher of English language and literature, (now retired, though) will you advise your students to read Tamil novelists to learn English? I’m not surprised at the writer’s flamboyant English; nor at your admiration of his English skill. Rather, I am surprised at the reaction of the principal who was teaching English in his college. He could have explained to you that the writer was defending his mistake.

//wonder struck with your fantastic logic, Bala Sundara Vinayagam!!! //
If a person says he never tells lies, he is a liar. It is not rocket science to conclude like that. Because life teaches us that none can live w/o telling lies as and when occasion demands from us. This being the case, you want us to accept Jayakantan’s bombast that he never told lies. No logic but simple common sense is called for here. Jeyakantan wanted to pose as larger than life hero to Tamils. Good to know from you that one boy from the audience didn't fall for his bait. :-)

You'r not replying to me properly. Your responses are a sort of being too clever by half.

I can't be found fault with for expecting a better understanding of English language from a Prof of English like you. That was why I had pointed out the misplaced admiration your Principal had for this guy Jeyakantan’s tilting at the windmills of English one-liners to impress. If you admire his novels, no one can interfere with that: for, it is subjective. But if your admiration is for abuse of English language, it should be pointed out. Being a Prof of English, you should be concerned whenever, wherever and by whomsoever, it is done.

I have already cited your blog post to some of my professor-friends (all of them holding eminent positions in Indian and Foreign Universities). When occasion arises, I shall write about their comments.

Au revoir

Yes, all of us have to confront our ‘selves’’ and face inconvenient questions – the same questions many philosophers have raised and attempted answers (some have become their unique philosophies under a various nomenclatures) Unexamined life is not worth living. So, we have to examine our conclusions so far held dear to us. I don’t mean to say you will end up in belief, or create a new philosophical system. It may result in conclusions that have been honed and issued forth out of you inevitable examination. Like a man who says he never told lies, is taken to be a sure and brazen liar who wanted to fool all of us, so also, the man who says he won’t question the purpose of his existence in his closing years and the issue of mortality, is a vegetable. Here is one who examines – and you must have read and taught his views to your young students, haven’t you?

An age at least to every part,
And the last age should show your heart.
For, lady, you deserve this state,
Nor would I love at lower rate.
But at my back I always hear
Time’s wingèd chariot hurrying near;
And yonder all before us lie
Deserts of vast eternity.
Thy beauty shall no more be found;
Nor, in thy marble vault, shall sound
My echoing song; then worms shall try
That long-preserved virginity,
And your quaint honour turn to dust,
And into ashes all my lust;
The grave’s a fine and private place,

BS Vinayagam Sir: You certainly know what JK meant by "I dont lie". Even I tell that. Civilized human beings understand what I meant. Only an illiterate will take "literal meaning". You act like an illiteratte now! You are making a big deal out of nothing. We all know, JK only means, he never wants to be labeled as a "liar" and that He believes lies have short half-life. His conscience does not allow him to lie.

கீறுபட்ட ரெக்கார்ட் மாதிரி நீங்க இதையே பெரிதுபடுத்தி சொன்னதையே சொன்னால், it only makes you look ridiculous! You are losing badly if you keep continuing your argument like this. Please stop this.

Hello Varun!

I don't write to win or lose. It is not a boxing arena. It is not about whether the writer is a liar or not. It is about the way the writer used his English words in the gathering; and the surprise that he was hailed for that. The writer doesn't have a 'feel' for the language. The one-liners or the conversations between his fictional characters in his novels, which Dharumi hails in Parseekkuppo - are a literary device novelists have to adopt in order to make their novels realistic. They pick up English for this specific purpose as they pick up slum lingo for creating slum characters. Because they pick up, it doesn’t follow they must be hailed as masters of English with great skill with language. I have a writer friend who is a novelist in Tamil. I help him with English sentences to put into the mouths of his characters when he creates snobs or upper class people. He doesn't know English as his education is up to 5th standard, just like Jayakantan. Like JK, my friend picked up Tamil. He has won prizes for his novels; and one of his novels is prescribed text in Indian Universities for Tamil Paper II (for e.g. Delhi University). He knows his characters have to speak true to the upbringing; or as snobs; otherwise, his novels will be effete. So, we need to understand that if a writer uses English sentences to give authentic touches, we should take it as a professional effort well done. There are, however, many novelists in Tamil who are also masters of English: e.g Ashoka Mithran. Praise where it is due. That is my caution. If Dharumi had said: JK has done well in inserting English words or sentences in correct contexts in Parseeku Po, it wouldn’t have raised eye brows. One doesn’t learn English from Parseeku Po – is absurd. That was why I asked: Can we advise our students to read Tamil novels to learn English?

Please understand that I am not talking about him as a person. I have written in Thinnai exhorting all to read novels w/o linking the creations with the creator’s personal lives. This is an English Prof blog - that you may mind first. He was a Prof of American College for decades. I expect a lot from him in defending good English and buttonholing the pretenders. On the contrary, here he is seen applauding a fellow who picked up a few sentences in English for professional necessity. That was why I quoted Donne - which he knows well; but you may not. I won’t quote any poet in your blog or about niceties of English language. Your blog is for not such matters. So, it is perfectly in order to make a mountain out of mole hill in this blog. We do it, in English studies: discussing word patterns and shocking distortions. All these will appear silly to laypersons like you. It's not your territory.
Taking him personally also, I stand by what I wrote: If anyone says he never told lies, HE IS A PUKKA LIAR. No matter whether he never wanted to be labeled as a liar (Whoever will want?) our concern here is that – on that day and on that place, he told a brazen lie and got caught red-handed by the boy. That’s all. Instead of praising the boy who called a spade a spade, the writer is praised for the clever use of English. It is not clever use; it is abuse. Young people don’t prevaricate as in the fable: Emperor has no clothes on. A small child pointed out the truth whereas the whole citizenry praised loudly how beautiful the dress of the Emperor was. It happens in our lives often and one example is here 

I have opened my eyes. It is what you have written:

That means your Principal wasn't teaching English; may not be a Prof of English. But he had enough scholarship to fish out the artistry in English sentences, as you said. That is, being more than a Prof of English :-) So, your Principal, according to you, found the defective sentence as perfect and a great English skill and shared with you his joy. You are exposing him, not me.

Be that as it may, you are a prof of English in American College. Or, a prof of some other subject? Which is correct? If latter, all that I wrote is misplaced. Because if you were a Prof of English, you would have found the sentence faulty and mocked at your Principal and the writer for his audacity.

Nothing of the sort. So, I am confirmed you are not a Prof of English. Am I correct in my presumption? I am only worried if you were a Prof of English and applauded the defective speech. But the sentence is so simple that a Prof of English is not needed to call it defective. Hero-worship should not be stretched to defend the indefensible. That's all. Matter ends there.

About atheism. Anyone can descend on any blog as it is kept open. You presume only persons known you should; others keep off. If so, you should restrict your blog reading only to your select friends. If you are so apprehensive of unknown people reading and commenting, it is high time you threw an iron curtain around your blog. It appears you have a select coterie: such selections indicates fear of facing different views on the same subject.

Your atheism is not discussed here at all. Only your doubt that one day you will become a believer! I have explained that such doubts are commonly seen in confessed atheists as they descend into the evening of life. and they will be assaulted by Intimations of Mortality!

Why are you getting so annoyed with me? Have I used bad words? You can happily debate me with Professor . I like the confessed atheists. They are interesting tribe to deal with. Welcome me to your atheist blog posts? Can I enter there with your permission?

***Hello Varun!

I don't write to win or lose. It is not a boxing arena.***

You think only boxing arena involves "battling" and "winning" and "losing"? How about a tennis court or a soccer arena? I can go on argue like this. That's exactly what you are doing here. But unlike you I DO UNDERSTAND what you REALLY MEANT when you said what you said above. I wish you could do the same when interpreting the phrase "I dont lie" by JK. Why it is too hard for you to do the same?

Let me stop here! Thanks for the understanding.

I am not sure whether you are annoying. You dont need to use bad words to annoy anybody. You can also phrase a "beautiful annoying sentence" to annoy someone.

***You can happily debate me with Professor . I like the confessed atheists. They are interesting tribe to deal with. Welcome me to your atheist blog posts? Can I enter there with your permission? ***

I am NOT sure the above quoted sentences fall in such category. But the "creators" of such sentences are ignorant about this, unfortunately! It is very hard to make them understand. It is a FACT!

wonder can't anybody say that he is not a liar! what a puritan soul i have to defend a plain and simple statement like this.

// All these will appear silly to laypersons like you. It's not your territory.// mr.When it is high time, you are really so humble and polite! a lovely language ....

Hellow Varun!

You could have stopped accepting this: IF ANY ONE SAYS HE NEVER LIES, HE IS A PUKKA LIAR.

Do you accept that or not?

When it is high time said...

Respected Prof,!

You are dodging inconvenient points of mine!

My point is: If anyone says he never tells lies, he is a pukka liar. JK made the statement in your college which you heard according to your blog post.

You have to face that point. Still, you haven't. False prestige?

I disagree with your point in your

//wonder can't anybody say that he is not a liar! what a puritan soul i have to defend a plain and simple statement like this. //

Read it again. You ask: Can't anybody say that he is not a liar?

My answer is: He can't say he is not a liar only only when confronted in particular context, not as a permanent personal quality. For e.g. I can say I am not a liar only when asked whether I have done or spoken a particular act.

So, your way of putting it should have been: Can't anybody say he is not a liar when asked to own up to an act? i.e. a specific occasion is referred to here.

Therefore, we must guard against ambiguities in English. Because such ambiguities may mislead or land us in embarrassments. If we are haughty or cowardly like that writer, we defend our English as that writer did it in your presence.

I should offer unsolicited advice only to people or persons like Varun. But how can I to you, a Prof of English in American College for decades? If you weren't a retired prof of English from that august college, kindly tell me in time so that I needn't continue to labor under that illusion.

Have a good night sleep ! Let Truth set us both of us free :-)

My name is not Mr When it is High time, it is as signed off under my messages.

Think once to denounce; but twice to praise//

This is what my unknown English professors taught me in our VOC College of Tuticorin- a college which cannot stand in comparison to the flamboyant American College of Madurai. Our professors helped us to think out of the box. .

I follow this principle, not twice but many times to praise.

With this, my comments are closed here.

let me keep praising you, Mr When it is High time!

Dear mr puritan it may be so for an agmark puritan like you. In normal parlance, it is just a statement that he is always for talking truth and not a double-tounged guy. But for a PURITAN like you he has to be just another Hrishchandra! I was talking about normal human beings like me and JK.

//kindly tell me in time so that I needn't continue to labor under that illusion.//
Better be with your illusions.

Your professors were really great. They have made you what you are – out of the box!

NOPE, I dont accept that. You dont seem to know what "a pukka liar" means. It is just your ignorance. I am not mad at you for being ignorant, I just feel sorry for you! That's all. Do take care!
