*

Is his incarnation a failed mission?

Why dont you send such queries to an evangelist - such people are aplenty in TN, aren't they?

They will give you answers in a manner quite convincing to you. Perhaps you may drop your skeptism. You may even become an evangelist yourself - who knows?

As I understand, Christianity does not flow from Christ unalloyed. He lived a short life and, then was elimianted in a political conspiracy.

He maintly attracted the fringe sections of the society he lived in - because he identified with them. Such sections were earlier being discriminated againts, and vilified by the Jewish society: in the case of lepers, they were made to live in caves outside the towns and villages and accept their leprosy as scrooge from God for their sins committed, like in Hindusim, the dalits were told the same, in order to accept their outcast status, meekly.

Christ therefore should be viewed as a man of the poor masses. And, it was not his aim to create a religion for all across the continents. He was not addressing your ancestors in Madurai. If you become a Christian, you should not hold Christ reponsible for your act!

His followers, chiefly St Paul, did everything in his name: and what we call 'Christianity' was nothing but his imagination. Hold that Sicilian Jew 'guilty', if you dont like Christianity!!

What is the purpose of a religion? To make people relate to God and enhance their spiritual life so as to give them a wholesome life, on this earth; and a hope for the life after death.

Skeptics like you or non-believers may scoff at such claim. But religion is not for skeptics. It is for believers.

If the believers live their life in a way that is acceptable to society, as a whole, including you, the skeptic, then the purpose of a religion is amply served.

No room for complaint then.

Dear Sam
Eventhough Jesus was born in a Jewish family, he was able to transcend the narrow barriers of caste, community, race, language etc; and as he proclaimed he became the saviour of mankind and not just Jews (according to the belief of Christians). Thiruvalluvar may be a Tamilian but his ideas are for all mankind.
Regarding the verses in St. Luke, we don't have to be tied downto the literal meaning of the verses. I have discussed with one or two Bible scholars and they say that itonly refers to the the conflict likely to arise out of of an attempt to disturb the existing orthodox but irrational custom or tradition. For example, when Sati was sought to be abolished there was a lot of opposition to it on grounds of its having been practised for a long time.A father steeped in tradition would clash with his son having a diametrically opposite view. This is true in the case of any human relationship- between father and son, mother and daughter etc;. This is inevitable when existing are sought to be be demolished. This is exactly what Christ wanted to do. He did not believe in following the beaten track or blindly accept what the pharisees or religious . He broke the Sabbath rules, mingled with the social outcasts and did everything possible to prove that he was a rebel in every sense of the term. In fact he was a true revolutionary- one who wanted to bring about a thorough change in the minds of the people. That resulted in bringing about aclash between those who wanted to clingon to the existing system with those who passionately believed in the necessity to bring about a clash may be between a father and a son etc. I think that this is the real meaning of the verses you have quoted.
And your question whether Christ's sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of mankind from sin has been in vain(judging from the way man has been indulging in sin in a more brazen way in recent times) appears to be justified but we have to keep in mind that it is too premature to come to such conclusions because, the end of time has not come and when it will be, we don't know.
I don'tknow whether I have touched upon all the points you have raised but I do feel that instead of splitting hairs over such philosophical questions which may be of interest from the academic point of view, it is better that we try to live in such a way that we are helpful and useful to others. This is my opinion.
I really admire you for kindling the minds of several people through your ideas in the blog.

DSL,

//...he was able to transcend the narrow barriers of caste, community, race, language etc;//

//...conflict likely to arise out of of an attempt to disturb the existing orthodox but irrational custom or tradition//

But the context does not show any such "inner meaning". this is what we prescribe to that situation.

//...too premature to come to such conclusions because, the end of time has not come and when it will be, we don't know. ..//

yes, we dont know !!!

//..splitting hairs over such philosophical questions which may be of interest from the academic point of view, //

mine is only an academic interest, of course to prove the invalidity of all religions.

The fact that Christ always identified himself with the poor and the downtrodden, irrespective of their community etc' shows that he cannot be called a tribal leader.

Thr fire of rebellion and revolution that he wanted to plant in the minds of the people would have definitely resulted in the breakdown of human relationships. This I think is referred to in the verses you have quoted.

Whether Christ would succeed in his attempt to redeem mankind from sin remains to be seen.
Anyway, THANK YOU FOR MAKING ME THINK.
