Good question.

Geography and anthropology are not my area of expertise, but I will speculate.
Migration can only be of two obvious types: forced or volunteer.
People may have been forced to migrate due to environmental or social conditions. Under such circumstances people would not have had many choices, but to settle where ever they can even if they are “godforsaken places”. For instance, the empire of Britain put its unwanted sons (“criminals”) in Australia. (Of course, today Australia by no means a “godforsaken place”)

People would have voluntarily migrated seeking spices, gold, or just from their curious and adventurous nature. Columbus’ exploration and pioneer settlements in the new world or North America can be classified in this area.

People are also naturally or emotionally attached to their homeland; wherever they born and grownup. Even though, it might look like ‘godforsaken places’ for outsiders, they are used it or they are not aware of or have access to better alternatives.

Perhaps, a more suitable and more practical question would be: why do ‘slum dwellers’ do not chose to live in a cottage home? I think you and I both know the answer for that.

On another note, your blog theme is unique. And I believe, framing sensible questions in clear ways can be a difficult exercise.

the two examples you have given do not, i believe, answer my question: i. columbus and 2. slum dwellers.
there were many adventurers like columbus (a pure adventure), chengiz khan (military adventure), missionaries (spiritual adventure!)and so on. what i am having in my mind is MIGRATION.

the important point is that why this migration in those very EARLY days that too, from continent to continent. what should have been the compulsion - when (1) there should have been less competition and rivalry for resources;
(2) hardship of transportation
