Samathuva Pongal: a toast to communal unity
Sweet Pongal dish made by students turns out to be a huge draw at Kilakarai college
AMITY: Students making Samathuva Pongal at Syed Hameedha Arts and Science College in Kilakarai on Thursday.
It was a different occasion for students of diverse faiths studying in Syed Hameedha Arts and Science College, Kilakarai, who gathered in traditional dresses of Tamils to celebrate a Samathuva (secular) Pongal.
The students, management representatives, professors and others clad in traditional dhotis and saris thronged the venue to celebrate the festival with pomp and gaiety at the college premises on Thursday.
While a section of women students engaged themselves in drawing rangoli as per the tradition, others made sweet Pongal in a pot which was decorated with items such as sugarcanes and others.
When it was distributed to a large number of students, they roared hailing the specialty of Pongal, which is being celebrated from time immemorial by Tamils.
“Pongal is not a festival of a particular religion. We feel it is a festival of Tamils and it is a uniting force. It symbolises our tradition and culture,” said S.M. Yousuf, Executive Director, Mohamed Sathak Institutions, Kilakarai.
The festival had closely associated with Tamil language and the secular identity of the festival should be safeguarded , he added.
Habeeb, Director, and Abul Hasan Sathali, Principal of the college, said since it was a festival of Tamils all students, professors and others associated with the college were asked to come to the festival wearing traditional dresses. It had conducted a number of competitions for bringing out talents among the students in view of the festival.
The college would continue to celebrate Pongal every year.
