Real agenda of communal groups in India is to eliminate democracy, says activist

MADURAI: Terrorism is not a product or an outcome of religion but the socio-politico-economic conditions related to the religion, said Ram Punyani, an anti-communal activist and former Professor of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
Delivering a special lecture, ‘Religious Fundamentalism- The Bane of Future India,’ here on Wednesday, Mr. Punyani went back to the days of freedom movement and recalled that it was in Madurai that the Mahatma decided to stop wearing modern clothes and adorned the attire of the peasantry class and the downtrodden of the nation, thus symbolising the conditions of the poor. It was Gandhi’s genius that made the nation come together.
It was highly ironical to find that Gandhi, being a supporter of Sanatan Dharma, was against the idea of a Hindu nation whereas Mohammed Ali Jinnah, a non-practicing Muslim, asked for an Islamic republic. He said that religion remained a multi-factorial phenomenon, and homogeneity the life pattern of members of different religious groups. Religious values did not clash with each other but supplemented one another. Clashes started when religion was exploited for political purposes.
During the freedom movement, the rising classes, which comprised the Indian National Congress, Republican Party of India and Bhagat Singh’s Hindustan Socialist Republic Association, functioned on the commonality that they had no basis on religion but on nation. However, on the other hand, declining classes, which had Muslim League and Hindu Maha Sabha, had its basis on religion and nation, he said.
The rising classes had every section of the social order represented but on the other hand the declining classes had a few section of the elites and religious groups in mind.
Prof. Puniyani opined that problems of fundamentalism had decreased to some extent and the defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the elections would not end the communal problems of India.
The real agenda of the communal groups in India was to eliminate democracy. Secular forces must bring back the social agenda where a condition was attained, making the Dalits, adivasis, minorities, women and workers get fully represented.

அவர் சரியாகத் தான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். சமுதாயத்தில் நிகழும் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் சமூக, அரசியல் மற்றும் பொருளாதாரக் காரணிகளே தீர்மானிக்கின்றன. என்ன, அப்படி நிகழும் ஒவ்வொன்றும், சௌகரியப்படி மதம், சாதி, ஆரியன், திராவிடன், வடக்கு தெற்கு இப்படி ஏதாவது ஒரு முகமூடி அணிந்து கொண்டே நிகழ்கின்றன என்பதையும் சேர்த்துச் சொல்லியிருந்தால், உண்மையை இன்னமும் துல்லியமாகப் புரிந்துகொண்டிருக்கலாம்!
ஆமாம் அவர் சரியாகத்தான் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்.
நீங்கள் சொல்லும் அத்தனை விஷயங்களுமே வரலாறோடு இணைந்த சமூகத்தின் அங்கங்கள் தானே; இல்லையா? அதை ஏன் முகமூடிகள் என்கிறீர்களோ தெரியவில்லை.
