951. BIBLE STUDY -

*

Dear Sam!

No Amen from me.

There's nothing strange about Mathew 10:37. It is found in all religions. Please read this:

This song is the bed rock on which stands the SriVaishnavam of Tamil Nadu. God is above all and the love of your parents is to be there, but not to the extent to lead you to forget the eminence of God. Our parents are human parents and so, limited in every sense. Their love and yours too are conditional whereas the love of God is unconditional. You're a confirmed atheist: so what? For God your atheism is laughable but very much lovable. He has deployed you to keep men who play the game of God in check. You serve both God and Man with your searing atheism like a spear. If you love your parents blindly like you love your cinema hero and pour pots of milk on his cut-out, or your Tamil writer-cum-hero and go ga-ga over him, such a blind attachment of human love and passion is an obstacle to realise God's love. It blurs your vision and numbs your thinking faculty. You become a child which its rattle is all that is in the world it needs :-)

Hinduism is categorical that as one undertakes the spiritual journey up the hill (remember your Christian in the Pilgrim Progress - like that! It was also a prescribed Text you must have handled as a Prof of English Lit !) one should go on discarding his ''earthly attachments'' of every kind, one by one. Travel light and reach your destination, God. Indeed, you're born here only to undertake the journey and reach the final destination. The life of sithars make it clear God transcends human love. Pattinathar rejected his mother (because he beleived Mathew 10:37 fully) but, on her plea, he relaxed 10:37 and came to perform her last rites.

At the same time, we shouldn't be rash to conclude that we can go straight to God giving up everything that depends on you and declare He is greater than all for you. The Bible writers are not simpletons to sneer at. They have also said you can't come to God after doing all harm to your loved ones: spurning them and hating them. Please read this: James I.4:20

"If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?"

Impossible for you to pretend in your worship.

From the self-same Mathew

""Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

It's a punchline - Love thy neighbour as theyself. There is a reverse way to mean this i.e. You cannot go and love your neighbour unless you have loved yourself. The Bible said somewhere - I don't recall where - Give charity till it hurts you. Your care is your first concern: the Bible points out to you. Because on an empty stomach you cannot even walk up to your bank to withdraw your money to pay for charity :-)

Religions are not laughable matters. They require us to ponder over its messages deeply.

"A little philosophy inclineth man's mind to atheism, but depth in philosophy bringeth men's minds about to religion." said Francis Bacon.

If you agree, say Amen.

no amen for you too.
pretty long story. i prefer short ones.
happy with 'little philosophy'. don't want to plunge into it. so i am where i am.

but you missed the crux. see the first para starting with ..

Oh I have missed. You're targeting only Muslims as brainwashed religious slaves. You don't want to attack Christians here - Why ? They're not religious slaves ?

//ந்ல்லவேளையாக எங்களுக்கும் சிறு வயதிலேயே இதை மனப்பாடம் செய்து, நேரம் கிடைக்கும் போதெல்லாம் இதைச் சொல் என்று நிர்ப்பந்திக்கவில்லை.
//

You were lucky a Christian kid, Sam. No one has forced you. Hence you've not read your Bible completely. If they'd forced you, you'd have known the James I drew your attention to. The Bible has contradictory verses and the freedom is given to choose ones you prefer. There's no verbal inerrancy just like Hindu religion which is all things for all men. As an atheist, you're far removed from the religions; hence, ignorance of what they say - fully. You may know parts.

BTW, dear Sam! I hadn't expected my lengthy message appearing here. Hating it but allowing it? The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. What a pleasure it is to chat up with atheists !

(More than 3 decades of teaching Eng language and literature; you must have auhored some books in English, not necessarily on the EL&L. Can I know? I would like to buy and read them. Please tell me)

// You're targeting only Muslims as brainwashed religious slaves.// quite good in putting your words into my mouth!

could it not be an attack on both? slavery is in both those abrahamic religions.

//More than 3 decades of teaching Eng language and literature// who? you or me?
